Southern California Bikers Raise Money for Humble Heroes Foundation

BriefingWire.com, 10/21/2013 - Long Beach, CA, October 5th, 2013:

Bikers joined together at the 1st Annual Bullseye Run for the Humble Heroes Foundation at the Berth 55 restaurant and Queens Wharf bar on October 5th to raise money for an outstanding military charity in the Humble Heroes Foundation.

The Humble Heroes Foundation was established to provide financial assistance to surviving children and spouses of service members killed in the line of duty. The foundation will assist families in achieving their life goals by providing scholarships and financial aid. Financial assistance will be in the form of donations such as college scholarships and fundraising events benefiting military families. They will also proudly support other organizations dedicated to helping our military families and pursue opportunities that provide direct support to active duty service members through community awareness and interactive morale programs. They commit to accomplishing this vision as a financially responsible non-profit entity in a manner consistent with public policy purposes. More information can be found at: www.humbleheroesfoundation.com

The event kicked off at noon with each person paying a $10 admission fee. With the price of admission each entrant was allowed to throw 3 darts for the Bullseye Competition. The winner at the end of day walked off with a cool $100 bill. Of course in true biker fashion the throw line was moved back farther than regulation to make the task a little more difficult! Daggers Deal and Down Affect were the 2 bands that generously donated their time to play for the event. At the end of the event a total of $1705 was raised for the Humble Heroes Foundation. This event was sponsored by the Devils Diciples M.C. – LACO Chapter.

<![CDATA[Humble Heroes Raises $ 25 Thousand ]]>Fri, 06 Sep 2013 13:33:52 GMThttp://humbleheroesfoundation.com/hhf-news/humble-heroes-raises-25millionHumble Heroes Foundation has raised nearly $42,000 the last two years to support organizations dedicated to helping military families and to provide financial assistance to surviving children and spouses of service members killed in the line of duty.

The assistance could come in the form of college scholarships and other financial aid.

The second annual HHF fundraiser netted $25,000 this year following a golf outing at the Preserve Golf Course at Honey Creek Resort, 5K/10K fun run on Rathbun Lake North Shore trail, live concert by John Stone and a meal on Saturday, Aug. 17.

The first HHF fundraiser last year netted almost $17,000 following a golf outing at the Appanoose Country Club.

HHF is an Appanoose County creation, started by two current and one former Centerville native.

Founding members are Justin Zaputil and Gaylon Cowan, both of Centerville, Troy Roach, formerly of Centerville now living in Houston, Texas and his Houston friend, Trey Barnes.

Zaputil said HHF was started following the death of their friend, Marine Corps Master Sergeant Travis Riddick, a Centerville native, who was killed in Afghanistan in 2012 while on active duty.

HHF is a way to show military families something more than telling them, “Thank you for your service,” Zaputil said.

“His untimely death left a void in many lives and reminded us of the high price paid by far too many of our country’s military men and women,” HHF website states. “After Travis’ passing we were left with feeling of helplessness and a desire to do something of significance that would show appreciation for our military service members.”

Zaputil said they had 100 sign up to play golf, for 25 teams at a cost of $400 per team.

Charity Cowan said they had 25 sign up to do the 5K/10K fun run at $25 per runner.

Cowan said it was great to see the runners enjoying themselves and raise money to help others.

<![CDATA[The first HHF event is in the books!]]>Thu, 03 Jan 2013 04:09:08 GMThttp://humbleheroesfoundation.com/hhf-news/the-first-hhf-event-is-in-the-booksDear Friends of the Humble Heroes Foundation,

I hope everyone has enjoyed a prosperous and fulfilling 2012. This is our first update since the successful May 2012 event in Centerville, Iowa (hosted by the Cowan Family) to launch the foundation. We appreciate everyone’s generosity
and support during the planning and execution of that event. The total funds raised were close to $8000!!! This initial fund raising was critical to get the foundation started and we expect continued success once we get past the initial non-profit registration with the IRS.

Speaking of the IRS, it has been a very slow process getting recognized as a 501(c) (3) registered non-profit charitable organization. We have diligently followed up on the status of our application over the past few months, but unfortunately there is a significant backlog of 501(c) (3) applications in 2012. Based on our last conversation with the IRS,
we expect full recognition by the first quarter 2013 just in time for our next event (May 2013).

Once we obtain registered charity status, we are able to apply for grants to help us fund our program and expedite
corporate sponsorships more effectively. This is our first year of existence so it is our understanding that all donations can be used as tax deductible during our “pending “status using the EIN identified on our receipt. IRS pub 557 indicates that the effective date of our exemption will be retroactive to our date of incorporation which is March 8, 2012.

A few highlights of 2012 include:

· Submitted application to the IRS for 501(c) (3) non-profit status
· Hired Foundation Group LLC to assist during the IRS application process
· Created a website and facebook page to keep friends of the foundation updated on events and success stories of
          the foundation
· Opened online student application and funding process
· Successful completion of the 1st Annual Iowa Outdoor Championships in memory of our friend and
          humble hero MSgt Travis Riddick
· Established a partnership with Welcome Home Soldier park and sanctuary

We genuinely appreciate your patience and continued support while we “cut our teeth” as a non-profit organization. The board is firmly committed and will work until our non-profit status is achieved and the foundation achieves its potential. Please keep a look out for future information on our website (www.humbleheroesfoundation.com) and our facebook
page (The Humble Heroes Foundation) for details on foundation events and developments. I wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a safe and happy New Year.

Warmest Regards,

Troy Roach
Foundation President

<![CDATA[Results of the First Iowa Outdoor Championships]]>Mon, 20 Aug 2012 14:25:52 GMThttp://humbleheroesfoundation.com/hhf-news/results-of-the-first-iowa-outdoor-championshipsThe 2012 Iowa Outdoor Championships (IOC) is in the books. It was a great event with beautiful weather and a healthy dose of friendly competition. We had 8 different states represented in the contestant field (Iowa, Texas, Arizona, Minnesota, Illinois, Missouri Ohio and Louisiana). Total funds raised for the event after tournament expenses was just over $10,000!!! Thank you again to all our sponsors with special recognition going to the tournament host Gaylon and Charity Cowan as well as our Platinum sponsor Dr. J Joe Hawk. Support for the event came from as far away as Warsaw Poland (Gold Sponsor Rob & Karen Dunn)!

The event kicked off with the sporting clays tournament (I think some of the clays were actually made of metal!) and the avid hunters in the group stood out significantly. The team of Thad Sowder and Art Kirschoff took home the Top Gun award, winning the event with 57 hits out of a possible 100. All shooters were given a basic instruction on course etiquette and issued hearing and eye protection to ensure their safety. We’re happy to say that aside from a few bruised egos there were no injuries.

The Washers tournament final was a 2 set (best 2 of 3) match with the Iowa team of Joe Hawk and Jesse Rognes versus the Texas Team of Scott Theut and Darren Fogt. Fogt and Theut had battled back through the consolation bracket to make it to the finals. In the end Texas took home the championship with back to back 2 game shutouts knocking off the previously undefeated team of Hawk and Rognes in dominating fashion.

Cornhole turned out to provide the highlight of all 5 events where the championship match came down to the wire, with the winner being decided by the final toss of a bag. The Texas team of Troy Roach and Trey Barnes came into the final match with an undefeated record after knocking off tournament favorites Joe Hawk and Jesse Rognes in the semi-finals. They were met by the Iowa team of Justin Zaputil and John Burgett who ended the Hawk/Rognes hopes of a rematch when they sent them packing with a 2 game sweep in the consolation finals. In the championship match after the Zaputil/Burgett team took the first set by edging out a 2 point victory in game 3, it came down to the final game in a tightly contested (best 2 of 3) matchup with each game being decided by fewer than 5 points. The game and the title were on the line, Roach and Barnes took it home with an ace on their last bag to win the final game 21 – 20.

Horseshoes saw an all Texas final when the team of Fogt and Theut finished their domination of the event by taking down fellow Texans Colt Walker and Bryan Western. It was clear that Horseshoes was the Achilles heal of most teams in the 5 event tournament but Fogt and Theut were in command of each match with no team even coming close to challenging them for the title. Based on this lopsided turnout we might replace horseshoes with a wiffle ball homerun derby next year!!!

A special Invocation was delivered at the start of the Golf 2-person Scramble Tournament by Pastor Terry Chapman (Church of the Nazarene in Moravia Iowa). His message of sacrifice and recognition for our brave service men and women couldn’t have been more appropriate. He effectively set the tone for why we were all there supporting the Humble Heroes Foundation and summed up the sentiments of all in attendance. Prior to the event a team of Mick Golic, Gaylon Cowan, Rodney Griffing and Scott Davis gave everyone a special surprise by placing U.S. Flags (100) all over the golf course in recognition of our Fallen Heroes. The flags were graciously loaned to the event by Larry “The Flagman” Echhardt who unfortunately was headed to another funeral but detoured long enough to drop off the flags for us to use. Justin Zaputil and John Burgett won the “A” Flight with a score of final score of 63. Consistent play and solid putting proved to be enough as they were able to hold off the second place team of Colt Walker and Bryan Western (66) and the 3rd place team of Troy Roach and Trey Barnes (67). Winners of the “B” flight was the team of Russ Parker and Caleb Housh (74) and in a stroke of good luck winners of the “C” flight in the 1st Annual MSgt Travis Riddick Memorial golf tournament with a score of 78 was the team of Tim Riddick and Troy Riddick.

It looked like the team of Joe Hawk and Jesse Rognes were going to walk away with the overall title but they totally imploded on day 2 to give way to Justin Zaputil and John Burgett our 2012 Iowa Outdoor Champions! The team of Scott Theut and Darren Fogt gave them a challenge but didn’t quite make it and finished as the tournament runner-up. We handed out the first “Tailgunner” Award for the team that came in last place. Nick Able and Brandon Winkler not only came in last, they’ve firmly set a tournament record with 5 total points after 5 events. This means they came in dead last in every event! Way to go guys, look at it this way they have nowhere to go but up.

To close out the tournament we asked Larry Keller to give a presentation on the Welcome Home Soldier Memorial in Albia Iowa. Welcome Home Soldier, a non-profit organization dedicated to honoring those who serve or have served our country's military, decided to construct a memorial just outside of the Lastar facility in Albia, IA. It was an emotional end to a weekend of remembrance and celebrating the life of our friend MSgt Travis Riddick. Larry’s presentation embodied the sacrifice our men and women in the military make and it really hit home with everyone in attendance. The Humble Heroes Foundation has decided to make a donation to support this worthy cause to show our support of their mission. Future links will be provided to their website as a way to help spread the word about this honorable project. We are already in the process of planning our next event the 2012 Texas Outdoor Championship. Information will be communicated through the website and our facebook page and we look forward to seeing you all there! God Bless and take care.
