The 2012 Iowa Outdoor Championships (IOC) is in the books. It was a great event with beautiful weather and a healthy dose of friendly competition. We had 8 different states represented in the contestant field (Iowa, Texas, Arizona, Minnesota, Illinois, Missouri Ohio and Louisiana). Total funds raised for the event after tournament expenses was just over $10,000!!! Thank you again to all our sponsors with special recognition going to the tournament host Gaylon and Charity Cowan as well as our Platinum sponsor Dr. J Joe Hawk. Support for the event came from as far away as Warsaw Poland (Gold Sponsor Rob & Karen Dunn)!
The event kicked off with the sporting clays tournament (I think some of the clays were actually made of metal!) and the avid hunters in the group stood out significantly. The team of Thad Sowder and Art Kirschoff took home the Top Gun award, winning the event with 57 hits out of a possible 100. All shooters were given a basic instruction on course etiquette and issued hearing and eye protection to ensure their safety. We’re happy to say that aside from a few bruised egos there were no injuries. The Washers tournament final was a 2 set (best 2 of 3) match with the Iowa team of Joe Hawk and Jesse Rognes versus the Texas Team of Scott Theut and Darren Fogt. Fogt and Theut had battled back through the consolation bracket to make it to the finals. In the end Texas took home the championship with back to back 2 game shutouts knocking off the previously undefeated team of Hawk and Rognes in dominating fashion. Cornhole turned out to provide the highlight of all 5 events where the championship match came down to the wire, with the winner being decided by the final toss of a bag. The Texas team of Troy Roach and Trey Barnes came into the final match with an undefeated record after knocking off tournament favorites Joe Hawk and Jesse Rognes in the semi-finals. They were met by the Iowa team of Justin Zaputil and John Burgett who ended the Hawk/Rognes hopes of a rematch when they sent them packing with a 2 game sweep in the consolation finals. In the championship match after the Zaputil/Burgett team took the first set by edging out a 2 point victory in game 3, it came down to the final game in a tightly contested (best 2 of 3) matchup with each game being decided by fewer than 5 points. The game and the title were on the line, Roach and Barnes took it home with an ace on their last bag to win the final game 21 – 20. Horseshoes saw an all Texas final when the team of Fogt and Theut finished their domination of the event by taking down fellow Texans Colt Walker and Bryan Western. It was clear that Horseshoes was the Achilles heal of most teams in the 5 event tournament but Fogt and Theut were in command of each match with no team even coming close to challenging them for the title. Based on this lopsided turnout we might replace horseshoes with a wiffle ball homerun derby next year!!! A special Invocation was delivered at the start of the Golf 2-person Scramble Tournament by Pastor Terry Chapman (Church of the Nazarene in Moravia Iowa). His message of sacrifice and recognition for our brave service men and women couldn’t have been more appropriate. He effectively set the tone for why we were all there supporting the Humble Heroes Foundation and summed up the sentiments of all in attendance. Prior to the event a team of Mick Golic, Gaylon Cowan, Rodney Griffing and Scott Davis gave everyone a special surprise by placing U.S. Flags (100) all over the golf course in recognition of our Fallen Heroes. The flags were graciously loaned to the event by Larry “The Flagman” Echhardt who unfortunately was headed to another funeral but detoured long enough to drop off the flags for us to use. Justin Zaputil and John Burgett won the “A” Flight with a score of final score of 63. Consistent play and solid putting proved to be enough as they were able to hold off the second place team of Colt Walker and Bryan Western (66) and the 3rd place team of Troy Roach and Trey Barnes (67). Winners of the “B” flight was the team of Russ Parker and Caleb Housh (74) and in a stroke of good luck winners of the “C” flight in the 1st Annual MSgt Travis Riddick Memorial golf tournament with a score of 78 was the team of Tim Riddick and Troy Riddick. It looked like the team of Joe Hawk and Jesse Rognes were going to walk away with the overall title but they totally imploded on day 2 to give way to Justin Zaputil and John Burgett our 2012 Iowa Outdoor Champions! The team of Scott Theut and Darren Fogt gave them a challenge but didn’t quite make it and finished as the tournament runner-up. We handed out the first “Tailgunner” Award for the team that came in last place. Nick Able and Brandon Winkler not only came in last, they’ve firmly set a tournament record with 5 total points after 5 events. This means they came in dead last in every event! Way to go guys, look at it this way they have nowhere to go but up. To close out the tournament we asked Larry Keller to give a presentation on the Welcome Home Soldier Memorial in Albia Iowa. Welcome Home Soldier, a non-profit organization dedicated to honoring those who serve or have served our country's military, decided to construct a memorial just outside of the Lastar facility in Albia, IA. It was an emotional end to a weekend of remembrance and celebrating the life of our friend MSgt Travis Riddick. Larry’s presentation embodied the sacrifice our men and women in the military make and it really hit home with everyone in attendance. The Humble Heroes Foundation has decided to make a donation to support this worthy cause to show our support of their mission. Future links will be provided to their website as a way to help spread the word about this honorable project. We are already in the process of planning our next event the 2012 Texas Outdoor Championship. Information will be communicated through the website and our facebook page and we look forward to seeing you all there! God Bless and take care. Final Results Overall Tournament Champion – Justin Zaputil / John Burgett (Iowa) Sporting Clays Champion – Thad Sowder / Art Kirschoff (Arizona/Iowa) Washers Champion – Scott Theut / Darren Fogt (Texas) Cornhole Champion – Troy Roach / Trey Barnes (Texas) Horseshoes Champion – Scott Theut / Darren Fogt (Texas) Golf Scramble Champion – Justin Zaputil / John Burgett (Iowa)
