Dear Friends of the Humble Heroes Foundation,
I hope everyone has enjoyed a prosperous and fulfilling 2012. This is our first update since the successful May 2012 event in Centerville, Iowa (hosted by the Cowan Family) to launch the foundation. We appreciate everyone’s generosity and support during the planning and execution of that event. The total funds raised were close to $8000!!! This initial fund raising was critical to get the foundation started and we expect continued success once we get past the initial non-profit registration with the IRS. Speaking of the IRS, it has been a very slow process getting recognized as a 501(c) (3) registered non-profit charitable organization. We have diligently followed up on the status of our application over the past few months, but unfortunately there is a significant backlog of 501(c) (3) applications in 2012. Based on our last conversation with the IRS, we expect full recognition by the first quarter 2013 just in time for our next event (May 2013). Once we obtain registered charity status, we are able to apply for grants to help us fund our program and expedite corporate sponsorships more effectively. This is our first year of existence so it is our understanding that all donations can be used as tax deductible during our “pending “status using the EIN identified on our receipt. IRS pub 557 indicates that the effective date of our exemption will be retroactive to our date of incorporation which is March 8, 2012. A few highlights of 2012 include: · Submitted application to the IRS for 501(c) (3) non-profit status · Hired Foundation Group LLC to assist during the IRS application process · Created a website and facebook page to keep friends of the foundation updated on events and success stories of the foundation · Opened online student application and funding process · Successful completion of the 1st Annual Iowa Outdoor Championships in memory of our friend and humble hero MSgt Travis Riddick · Established a partnership with Welcome Home Soldier park and sanctuary We genuinely appreciate your patience and continued support while we “cut our teeth” as a non-profit organization. The board is firmly committed and will work until our non-profit status is achieved and the foundation achieves its potential. Please keep a look out for future information on our website (www.humbleheroesfoundation.com) and our facebook page (The Humble Heroes Foundation) for details on foundation events and developments. I wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a safe and happy New Year. Warmest Regards, Troy Roach Foundation President
